Conferences
and Keynote Presentations to Integrative Healthcare
Audiences
Matthew uses his personal story, as yoga teacher and
paraplegic, to expand the conception of healing. He
explores the vital role played by caregivers
both in the emerging field of mind-body healing and
in the vision of a more integrative healthcare system.
Sample Topics
A Practical, Integrative Approach to Minds
and Bodies
Matthew weaves his unique experience with trauma,
paralysis and yoga into a powerful, two-fold insight:
First, that every injury, every disability is fundamentally
a mind-body injury. And secondly, that there are subtle
connections that exist between mind and body
beyond the ability to activate muscles
that must be included within our medical paradigm
to ensure the best outcomes. Sanford uses his story
to draw out the implications of these basic truths
for doctors, nurses, rehab professionals and alternative
health care providers.
Yoga, Healing,
and Paralysis: Thoughts on Transforming Healthcare
Using his heart-wrenching, real-life story as a template,
Matthew explores not just how yoga is an important
complementary therapeutic modality, but also offers
practical ways that a deepened mind-body approach
can transform the continuum of healthcare
from acute intervention through an individual's long-term
health practices.
The Third
Category of Health
This talk illustrates that many of our physical problems
are fundamentally mind-body problems. Effective health
management requires paying attention not just to physical
health, or mental health, but also to one's mind-body
health. This third category of health is new to most
people. However, this interactive talk will provide
insights and helpful tips in caring for one's mind-body
relationship.
